SQL Server Backup and Recovery

A green backup job means a file was written. It does not mean you can rebuild the database, meet the business recovery point, or read the file after the server is gone.

The question is the restore

We look at the full, differential and log chain, where those files are copied, and whether anyone has restored them recently. Encrypted backups are only useful if the certificate needed to restore them is kept somewhere else. A copy that sits on the same disk as the data file fails with the disk.

Ongoing backup operations are part of SQL Server DBA services. A site-loss plan is disaster recovery.

What an assessment checks

  • Full, differential and transaction log backups
  • A gap in the log chain
  • A copy that is not on the database server
  • The last successful restore test
  • Whether the business recovery point is even possible

Ask for a restore test, not another backup job

Tell us the SQL Server version and where you think the backup files are. We will tell you if the chain can be restored.
