Azure SQL Server

Azure has more than one place to run SQL Server. The right one is the service your jobs, logins and application can actually use.

Database, Managed Instance, or a virtual machine

Azure SQL Database fits a contained database. Managed Instance is the closer match when you need SQL Agent, cross-database work or a lift of an existing instance. SQL Server on an Azure virtual machine is the choice when you must keep the engine you already operate. Picking the managed service and then discovering Agent jobs have nowhere to go is a late surprise.

Platform comparisons are on cloud and hybrid database services. The move itself is database cloud migration.

What decides the target

  • SQL Agent, linked servers and cross-database queries
  • Features the application uses that a managed service omits
  • Size, downtime and how you will cut over
  • Who administers it after the move

Name the Azure service you are considering

If you have not chosen one, say so. The current SQL Server version and the features the application uses are the useful facts.
